2 Familists were a mystic religious sect known as the Familia Caritatis. Its followers were accused of asserting that all things were ruled by nature and not directly by God.

3 Gataker’s original words were: “to cease binding faggots and to go thresh hemp” which might be seen in a somewhat different light in today’s English!

Chapter 8

Minor arguments against gambling

Having dispatched all the main arguments directly intended to prove that gambling using a lottery is simply unlawful and so evil in itself, we now proceed to the minor arguments. They are intended to prove that gambling is inconvenient and inexpedient and because of that it has been generally disallowed and condemned. These arguments may be ranked in two rows: the first of them is drawn from the evils and inconveniencies that necessarily or ordinarily attend gambling and the games that they consist of.

These evils they are charged with come under four heads:

1. Cursing, ranting and blaspheming.

2. Waste of time and decay of health.

3. Unlawful gain, or desire of gain.

4. And lastly, the wasting of wealth.
